Although born and raised in Brooklyn, Jovonn never released on Nu Groove in the early ’90s, choosing instead to set up his own imprint, Goldtone Records. Given the richness and quality of his deep house sound, it’s nice to see him finally debut on the revitalised NYC label. He hits the ground running with the rubbery, warehouse-ready rush of ‘Raise Up (Raise Up High)’, where dreamy chords and tight organ stabs emerge from behind a killer bassline and hypnotic house beats, before opting for a warmer and more relaxed, classic-sounding NYC deep house vibe on ‘Sunday Ride’. Over on the flip-side, ‘What’ is a toasty, sun-splashed slab of summery deep house brilliance, while ‘Let The World Dance’ sees him cannily combine angular, early LFO-style synth bass, immersive chords, bleeping melodies and crunchy drum machine beats.
