We looked at some of the jazz records we have in stock on were up for sale this month. We selected the following as our top 5 of June. In no particular order of course
- Ruby Rushton – IronSide
on 22A, a gatefold 2xLP with 10 tracks on it. Tenderlonious’ prolific explorations of contemporary jazz continue unabated with this new album from his supergroup, Ruby Rushton. With Mo Kolours and Yussef Dayes (formerly of Yussef Kamaal) amongst the highly skilled players in this ensemble, the quality spilling out of their fourth album need not be questioned. Fresh and satisfying at every turn, this is proof of why the modern jazz scene is so vibrant right now. Ruby Rushton can do no wrong! – Juno Records
2. The Cinematic Orchestra – To Believe
Opening with the poignant neo-classical/soul fusion “To Believe”, the set sees Jason Swinscoe and company attractively saunter between jazz-electronica fusion (Roots Manuva collaboration (“A Caged Bird/Imitations Of Life”), pastoral jazz epics (the sunset ready epic that is “Lessons”), gentle downtempo songs (“Wait For Now/Leave The World”), ambient jazz (“The Workers Of Art”) and slowly unfurling dancefloor workouts (killer closing cut “A Promise”). In a word: stunning. – Juno Records
3. Miles Davis – Someday My Prince Will Come
A 2019 Record store day reissue special – The album is exceptional on many counts, but among the most noteworthy and alluring aspects of this project is that it marks the final recorded collaboration between Miles Davis and John Coltrane. – Jazziz
4. Ivan mamao Conti – Poison Fruit
This enormously gifted veteran lands an outstandingly compelling album. ‘’Poison Fruit’’ is a representative vision of his unlimited futuristic reflections where his drum patterns meets exotic fusion of jazz-Brazilian funk. A heavy mix of percussions and futuristic synth stabs with soaring Rio de Janeiro fauna vibes and effects are shaping his 20 years delayed album, this earthbound space jazz craft of spiritual, ethereal and nightime milestone. So far, the best end of the year and early 2019 release. ‘’Poison Fruit’’ is December’s 2018 album of the month and ‘’Bacurau’’ Nova Planet Radio Show TRACK OF THE MONTH. – Nova Planet Radio Show
5. Moonchild – Please Rewind
Pressed to vinyl for the very first time – This long player ties together ten chilled out grooves which ooze soul-jazz rhythms, horns and sweltering, heart-filled vocals. Using soulful horn solos and vibrant key riffs and breaks, “Please Rewind” sounds like an arthouse film score to an unfolding LA love story, which seeps into your subconscious and out of your headphones.
